Why are there several river Fromes in England?
Frome comes from a Saxon word meaning ‘lively bubbling river’. Presumably when the Normans conquered Britain and started to record place names they asked the locals what the river was called. Several replied with the local word for river – ‘Frum’.
In a similar way there are several River Avons in England. Avon is the Celtic word for river Presumably when the Romans conquered Britain and started to record place names they asked the locals what the river was called. Several replied with the local word for river – ‘Avon’.
