FRENCHAY VILLAGE HALL IMPROVEMENTS
The Frenchay Village Hall Management Committee would like to take this opportunity to update you on the funding generated by the SGC Section106 Agreement relating to the Redrow Housing development, which is to be used to carry out
Improvements to the Village Hall.
This funding, together with our own available funds, will make the Village Hall ready for the next 25 years, enhance its facilities for the community, improve accessibility and sustainability of operations.
We have recently had the Hall surveyed and generated ideas for improving the building infrastructure, in particular the heating, insulation, double glazing, electrics, lighting, toilets and accessibility. There is also the possibility of extending the entrance area with an extended porch, remodelling the lobby area and stairs to the first floor and other general layout improvements.
One additional idea is to provide an office space, with internet, printer and ‘open use’ meeting room which may be a useful asset for the village community.
General maintenance items will continue to be funded from our existing funds and also look into other grant opportunities for improvements beyond what can be funded by the S106 grant. If anyone has experience in grant applications and could help with this, please get in touch.
We would also like to hear from anyone with project management or other expertise, to assist us with the forthcoming building projects.
The Village Hall is a valuable asset for the whole community, we would like to ensure that we utilise the Section106 funding wisely, your views are important to us. We will share more details as the plans develop.
Thank you in advance.

June 2021
We are delighted to announce that the Village Hall now has a bike shelter, positioned towards the back of the carpark. It will hold up to 8 bikes and is in a location which is covered by lights and the CCTV system at the Hall.
A huge thanks to the members of New Life Church for installing this and for the many other jobs they carried out as part of the ‘Bristol Noise’ weekend. These included weeding and replanting the flower beds, painting the side fence and gate, building a new flower trough, removal of the old tables from the Hall and assembling new ones, with the old tables being given to Frenchay Museum and North Bristol Foodbank.
We are really pleased to see that several of our regular groups have been able to return to using the Hall albeit with restricted numbers and social distancing. This hopefully marks the start of a return to social gatherings and activities in the Hall which are so important for every community.
Finally the Committee has recently commissioned a full structural and design survey of the Hall so that we can start planning improvements to it, making use of the community sum payable by Redrow under the planning agreement.

May 2021
As the COVID restrictions and Lockdown rules gradually relax during May and June we are hoping that some of our regular groups will be able to return to their activities at the Village Hall.
If you are involved in any events at the Hall, please make use of the hand sanitisers and be aware that we are doing extra cleaning between events to keep everyone safe.
You may also notice that at the front of the Hall some of the Committee, with the help of Neil Falango and his team from the Frenchay Pond Improvement Team, have planted a new hedge which consists of wild roses, hawthorn and blackthorn. This has been made possible thanks to South Glos VE Day community funding and will enhance the area around our Tommy silhouette.
Wishing everyone a healthy and happy Spring from the FVH Committee.

January 2021
After such an extraordinary time last year, we hope 2021 will bring us all back to good health and enable a gradual return to community activities with the ability for groups and celebrations to resume which will be so important for our well-being.
During last year most regular groups were suspended at Frenchay Village Hall and the committee worked hard to adhere to government lockdowns and guidance on appropriate use of the Hall. Many organisations have not been able to meet in person for many months but we are delighted to say that the pre-school reopened after the first national lockdown and has remained open during term and holiday times. Well done to Lucy and her team who provided a much needed provision for young children and their working parents for most of last year.
The committee purchased a fogging machine to sanitise rooms between any bookings when these were permitted. Detailed information and posters were displayed to all groups and hand sanitiser stations were located around the hall so that some smaller groups could function during the ‘rule of 6’ period.
We will continue to be led by government guidance on when we can re-open the hall for general bookings and we hope that most activities will return and flourish again some time early in the New Year.
The committee continued to meet via Zoom during 2020 and here are a few new things you might notice if you are passing the hall.
In November 2020 we purchased a ‘Tommy Silhouette’ (a metal outline of a soldier) using a VE Day donation from South Glos Council. He is currently positioned on the edge of the carpark and was in place for Remembrance Day in November last year.
Inside the hall there will soon be new tables to give a fresh smart look for all events. Anyone who has a use for the old tables please get in touch.
Our very old noticeboard has finally been removed and two new ones in green oak will shortly be erected. They will contain information about activities at the hall and also Parish Council notices.
At the rear of the hall we are also installing a covered cycle rack for 8 bikes which we hope will encourage visitors to cycle to the hall rather than drive.
Finally the committee would like to wish all Frenchay residents a happy and most importantly a healthy 2021 and we look forward to seeing you back at the hall as soon as it is safe to do so.

New Equipment for Frenchay Village Hall
Frenchay Village Hall Management Committee is pleased to advise all users of the hall that in light of the COVID pandemic it has purchased an anti-viral fogging machine which will be used between lets. Used in conjunction with the anti-viral disinfectant, this machine ensures that all surfaces, including soft furnishings, are sanitized.
The machine is additional to all measures already undertaken such as hand sanitizers strategically placed in the hall, additional cleaning as required and adhering to the social distancing criteria as advised by the Government.
It is hoped that these measures will give reassurance to all our users that the Committee is doing all it can to ensure that the hall is as safe as possible for everyone.

The Village Hall Committee would like to say a huge ‘Thank you’ to members of New Life Church Bristol (NLC) who spent the Sunday of the May Day Bank Holiday weekend doing some much needed jobs both inside and outside the Village Hall.
NLC’s main project was to create raised flower borders around the car park as a safety barrier. This is especially important as the Hall is used regularly for pre-school and nursery groups. The flower borders were created out of sleepers and planted with a wide variety of easy to maintain shrubs and flowers.
NLC also installed a new post and rail fence behind the vegetable garden to protect visitors from the barbed wire which now surrounds the field. Other areas were weeded and barked, new low energy LED security lights were fitted along one side of the Hall and the gutters were cleaned and brushed.
Inside, the church carried out a spring clean of the kitchen including emptying out and cleaning all the cupboards and the fridge and the hall now looks smart and fresh ready for the start of the summer. We are very grateful to all of those who worked so hard on this project which was part of NLC’s ongoing “Love Your Neighbourhood” initiative.

Frenchay Village Hall continues to be a busy community destination with 24 organisations using it regularly as well as many booking for weddings, parties and social events. A list of our current regular groups and contact details and times for these groups can be found on our website www.frenchayvillagehall.co.uk
Members of the New Life Church have recently carried out some much needed general maintenance and gardening and their community vegetable plot has produced a bumper crop this year despite the drought - feel free to pick some tomatoes, courgettes, onions or beans if you are in the area.
Plans are progressing for a variety of improvements to the Village Hall and we are currently focusing on external improvements including new improved signage, bin storage and cycle racks.
If you would like to know more about our plans, please come along to our AGM which this year will be on Monday 22nd October at 7.30pm, where there will be an opportunity to ask the committee questions about future plans. Again this year there will be cheese and wine available courtesy of the New Life Church.
We are also looking for a few new members for the committee to represent the local residents. If you would like any information about joining the committee please get in touch with us on [email protected]

December 2017
Over the next few years we will see exciting changes happening in Frenchay village as the local population increases as a result of the Frenchay Park development. The Village Hall is one of the key community facilities in the immediate area available for events, socials and activities and with the help of community funding and grants, the Village Hall Committee are planning a
number of internal and external improvements to the Hall (which is now over 100 years old) to respond to the anticipated increased demand.
To help inform our plans about what changes to make we carried out a consultation exercise at the last Frenchay Flower Show which generated over 130 responses and to keep local residents up to date with our plans we will be including regular updates in the Frenchay Community News.
This month, after our recent AGM, we are delighted to announce that David Sommerhill has been elected as Chair of the Committee. David has already made a significant contribution to the Committee in his role as Deputy Chair and brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role from his work as senior development manager at Knightstone Housing Association.
Our treasurer however has been re-elected on an interim basis as he has moved to Lydney, a 45 minute drive from Frenchay, so we are in urgent need of a replacement as soon as possible. The work for this would be relatively light with monthly meetings but we would very much like to hear from anyone with some bookkeeping experience who may be able to join the committee in this role. If you are interested in this please contact us on [email protected] for more information.
Next month we will provide a summary of the recent Village Hall questionnaire and provide an update on our future plans.
If you would like any more information about the Hall or about the regular activities that take place please visit our website at www.frenchayvillagehall.co.uk
