Books

Why books? It’s because they play an important part in my life. When I write my thoughts as I have done each month for the last twelve years, I always wish we could have a two way conversation. I suppose that is why Facebook is so popular. If you know me, please give me some feedback.

Do you enjoy reading? I enjoy my cosy bed, a glass of wine, or a mug of drinking chocolate and a good book. What bliss at the end of a busy day!  My father and my husband couldn’t get enough books! Both of our children could read fluently by the time they started Infant school, which I am sure gave them a good start. Now our son teaches English and loves his chosen subject. His favourite book is the “Complete Works of Shakespeare”. Have you ever joined a book club? Our daughter really enjoys going to hers and has made some good friends.

My youth was coloured by romantic fiction. No children's classics or Harry Potter! Why? No television in my day, so most evenings my father read aloud to my mother and myself. More romantic stories at Junior school. The last hour of every Friday afternoon was reading time. We chose our own books, and the teacher never checked what we read. I found some adult books at the back of the bottom shelf. Disaster arrived when at our first English lesson at Red Maids we were asked to write down a list of books we had read. I’m sure the teacher was shocked to read mine! Thank goodness that “Fifty Shades of Grey” had not been written!

My favourite non-fiction books now are about France, Claude Monet and cookery. I usually enjoy fiction by Joanne Harris. Perhaps you have seen the film version of “Chocolat”? I didn’t enjoy “Blackberry Wine”. “Holy Fools” is interesting, but not an easy read. However “Coastline” is so good I have read it twice. It’s special for me as it’s set in the Vendée where we lived for seven years, Next month I will tell you more about this lovely region of France.

Happy reading,
Esmé
