Bristol Awards

2/5/2016

I am Bristolian and very proud of my city! When I decided to leave France and live again in England, I didn't hesitate in choosing Bristol. I knew that I had many friends here, but I didn't know then how lucky I would be in making new ones. Money can’t buy true friends.

Do you ever watch the “Made in Bristol” channel on television? Last evening I saw “Bristol Lifestyle Awards”, an Oscar style event. The prizes were made by Bristol Blue Glass. Have you watched it being made? The skill of the artists is incredible. I own a Bristol Blue ball that was given to my grandparents about 150 years ago on the occasion of their engagement. They were married soon afterwards, well actually they eloped! My great-grandfather was a mill owner and wouldn’t give his permission for his daughter to marry a poor farmer.

I am very nervous about broken glass since sitting beside a man in the eye hospital who had some in his eye. I was fortunate that the caretaker at Fonthill school always cleared up the broken milk bottles for me.

“The Lifestyle Awards Event” was sponsored by Audi. The owner was also responsible for getting the guests to the venue. There was much laughter when he teased our Lord Mayor, George Ferguson, about the transport system in Bristol. He must have tried to drive down
Cleevewood Road one weekday morning!

The greenest business award went to “Edible Bristol”. “The Cowshed “ in Penn Street was voted the favourite restaurant, and the “Bristologist”, the best bar. “Garment  Quarter” won the best fashion outlet, just the boost they needed after being burgled twice recently. The “Best Bristol Experience“ was achieved by Bristol Zoo.

Before moving to France, we lived in Downsview Court, so close to the zoo that we could hear the lions roaring! We had seaon tickets, so that we could cut through the zoo grounds on our way to Clifton village.

I was delighted when “Hotel du Vin” beat the big hotels. I haven't stayed there, but the food is excellent. Yes, I realise that it is French style! Bristol has often been voted the most popular city in which to live. The presenter said, “If you aren’t living here, what is wrong with you?”

I wish you a spring in your step for May.
